Brake Inspection

The brake system is your car’s most important safety system. Never put off routine brake inspections or any needed repair so that your car can continue to operate safely as designed.

Brakes are a normal wear item for any car. Eventually, they’re going to need to be replaced for both performance and safety reasons. Ideally, have your brakes checked every two years or 20,000 miles. Performing scheduled brake checks can also save you money – don’t wait until your brakes get to the “metal-to-metal” point, which usually means expensive rotor or drum replacement, in addition to the pads and/or shoes. However, anytime you feel a “grinding” sensation when braking, you hear constant squeaking when braking, or if your brake light on your dashboard lights up, these are all indicators to have your vehicle’s brake system check as soon as possible.

Your car owner’s manual might specify periodic flushing and filling of the brake hydraulic system. Contaminated brake fluid may lead to erosion and other problems in the hydraulic system, especially on cars with anti-lock brakes (ABS).

The typical “brake job” consists of brake pad and/or replacement, along with related hardware. Depending on the condition of thickness of the drums or rotors, machining (turning) or replacement of the rotors may be necessary.

At Ernie’s Auto Service, we check both axles of your vehicle (front and back brakes) and only replace the parts that are worn-out or damaged. An average cost for a one axle brake job, in most vehicles, costs between $125 to $150 (parts and labor) depending on the parts replaced. A brake job for both axles, in most vehicles, the cost can be around $350 (parts and labor). Ernie’s Auto Service offers genuine NAPA Auto Brake Parts, with the NAPA nationwide Peace of Mind Warranty for 12 months or 12,000 miles for most brakes. Other brake brands may come with 2 year or limited lifetime warranty. Call our shop today if you have further questions or to schedule an appointment.
